Grandpa's Guitar * * * * * * * ALBUM DETAILS and NOTES "RIDE THE WIND" In the beginning, Doug Giddins was the main engineer on this project and also played some of the bass guitar parts. He became a dear friend by spending hours with me recording. When we weren't recording we'd sit and talk. He shared with me a dream he once had when he was extremely ill in the hospital. He dreamt he died and was riding the wind, feeling free while flying above the city, going anywhere he wanted to go. He told me because of that dream he wasn't afraid to die. Doug passed away in 1993 from Lupus. I will never forget Doug and his kindness, especially his laughter and huge smile. The song "Ride the Wind" was written for Doug and he got to hear it before he rode the wind. Ride the Wind" developed yet more meaning since it was written. I sang it in Nashville at the Bluebird Cafe and dedicated it to the late Bob Alekno who died in a car accident on the way home from a gig at the Grand Ole Opry. Bob was in my band. He was a friend who seemed to always handle any situation with grace. He had ideas that worked, a sense of humor, and the patience of a saint. Many people, including myself say that Bob was the kindest person they had ever known. Bob played the mandolin on the song "Crazy Driver" which was recorded in Nashville. I am honored to have on my album, Bob's last recording. "Ride the Wind" was the last thing my beloved Edgar Reyes heard before he died on October 2, 1995. (I just realized that today as I am editing this, it is October 2, 2008. It has been 13 years today that Eddy died.) I met Eddy in 1976 while listening to a band at a fair. We stayed together as a couple until 1985. Gary Potterton took over the engineering job for this album after Doug passed away. Gary is one of the greatest country music guitarists around and was the key musician in my band. He did most of the music on this CD plus sang some great background vocals. Gary is also a songwriter. He wrote the song on this album called "Crazy Driver" and was the producer for Dr. Elmo's album with the popular Christmas song on it called, "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." Gary, thank you so much for all your talent, hard work, and mostly your friendship. One of my favorite songs on this album, "Sing To Me," was written by Jim Derrickson, also known as "Montana Jim". I met him when he came to volunteer at a horse ranch that I was managing. The last I heard, he was shoeing horses in Alaska. Jim is a quiet, good-hearted man who has the deepest, roughest, yet most tender voice I've ever heard. His songs really touch people. It literally gave me the shivers when I first heard him sing "Sing To Me". Thank you so much for the use of your song Jim. Three songs on this album were written by my dear friend, Mike O'Connell, also known as "Ranger Mike", who I join in singing "Jim's Last Ride". He is a profound songwriter who recorded a heartfelt, down to earth, traditional western music album called, "Paint Pony," which received high praises from Gary McMahan, the president of the Western Music Association. Mike is now working on getting some of his songs to Michael Martin Murphy. Mike, thank you for your songs, your encouragement, ideas and love. Thank you Melanie (my big sis and great songwriter) for your support and consultation concerning my music career. I want to thank my dear friend and partner, Sergio Monsanto for all the help he's given me with my band over the years. Thanks for getting gigs, rounding up musicians, kicking me in the rear when I needed it and all the other managerial help. But most of all, thank you for believing in me. Thank you Dad (he was known as "Moose" [1924-2008]) for your way of life and your 45 years of being a Ranger that enabled me to grow up in a beautiful country setting that helped pattern my style of music.

KIM ATKINSON:
Hi, I'm Kim Atkinson, percussionist, rhythm educator/evangelist, and the driving force behind PulseWave Percussion. Studying rhythm, and cultures that give it prominence, has been one of the most significant currents in my life. I discovered African drumming in 1973 while a psychology/natural science student at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California. My four-year encounter with Yoruba dancer/musician/teacher A. O. Vidal led me to study linguistics, ethnology, mythology, history, and perception along with music, and in the process changed my world view. Drumming and drum culture has invigorated my life and given me a clear direction and fulfilling service.
Other key encounters for me have been studying and performing with C. K. and Kwaku Ladzekpo, master artists from Ghana, West Africa. C.K.'s insistence, in his U. C. Berkeley African Music class, on keeping the main beat while speaking drum language and clapping bell or clave parts has become the basis of the method I use to teach myself and others. In 1977, Kwaku taught me all the bell, rattle, calls, and support parts to fifteen traditional Ghanaian rhythms. Having this amount of authentic material at hand as a young performing musician was invaluable.
In 1984 I met Brazilian Shaman Antonio Costa e Silva. He encouraged me to expand my awareness to observe the effects of my drumming on others and myself, and to pay attention to the quality of energy surrounding my thoughts and actions. Through him I was initiated into playing for healing ceremonies in the Brazilian Umbanda tradition as well as exploring facets of Tibetan Buddhism. I studied with him for ten years and have played for countless ceremonies. My music can be heard on the following recordings, and many others as well. Album titles are in quotes, followed by the artist or group.
